Athletic Club took a big step in their pursuit of European competition on Tuesday by beating Espanyol 2-0 at the San Mames. Aritz Aduriz’s brace lifted the Lions to victory and saw them clim to 6th in the lead table. Following the match, Aduriz and Aymeric Laporte spoke to the media and had the following to say about the win and their upcoming game against Villarreal on Friday.
“I’m glad these goals served to help win the three points. I’m satisfied with my performance. Once it became 2-0, the team settled into controlling the game and we are proud to win against such a strong opponent. We managed to open the scoring soon and that facilitated thing to help us win. The upcoming game against Villarreal will have a big pull on our season. We have to continue our good form and get those three points.”
“We have to slow down a little bit, which is what the coach advises us to do. There is a lot going on with so many games. There were some changes in the team but we are all in good shape. I am doing very well physically. I think I am myself again and playing at a high level. That shows on the field. There will be better and worse matches than today but we played a good game and hopefully what comes next will be good too. We know we have a long road ahead of us. We want to finish as high as possible. We aren’t thinking of others but just fighting for our place among the top six, but we haven’t given up on fifth or fourth either.”
