Ernesto Valverde remains the focal point of discussion in Bilbao with the manager’s future at Athletic Club very much in question. He has made history with the Basque giants and other clubs have taken notice. For several months now he has been linked with a move to Barcelona, being one of the finalists to take over for Luis Enrique, along with Unzue. However, there are other clubs eyeing Txingurri, namely Arsenal.
It was recently reported that the English club had reached out to Valverde with interest in having him take over for Arsene Wenger. Understandably, he isn’t the only manager being looked at, but Arsenal seems to believe that he could take the team over the hump. On Tuesday, Jose Felix Diaz of Marca reported that the Gunners had made a second contact with Valverde’s representatives about possibly making the move to England.
In the past Valverde has said that the idea of coaching in England interested him. Arsenal would be a club that would allow him to compete for titles and have access to some of the world’s best players on the market. It is yet to be seen whether or not Valverde favors a move to Arsenal because he has kept a tight lid on idea of leaving Athletic Club this summer when his contract expires.
Along with Barcelona and Arsenal, Sevilla is also said to be interested in Valverde. Jorge Sampaoli is expected to leave this summer to take over as the Argentina manager, which would leave a huge hole at the club. For now, Ernesto Valverde has claimed that he has not spoken with President Josu Urrutia about his future and that he will not field or consider offers until the current season has officially come to a close. If that is true, it could still be several weeks before we know what will happen with Ernesto Valverde.
