New manager Cuco Ziganda is busy preparing for his first season in charge at Athletic Club, and that includes taking a detailed look at the squad. The club has already announced that Gorka Iraizoz would not have his contract renewed, but there are other players that will see their deals end at the end of this month. On Friday, Athletic officially announced that Gorka Elustondo would not be getting a renewal and will be leaving the club.
Elustondo was raised at Real Sociedad’s academy where we went on to play in nearly 150 games for the first team. In 2015, La Real chose not to sign him to an extension and he made the move to Athletic Club. Despite being able to play as a defender or as a defensive midfielder, the 30-year-old rarely featured for the Lions and was seen as more of a depth player.
Leaving Athletic doesn’t really come as a surprise when taking into account that he was a fringe player under Ernesto Valverde. Also, there are several other young players who are fighting for a spot in the first team and may now have an avenue thanks to Elustondo’s departure. At this time the veteran has made no mention of what his future holds, but many expect him to continue playing football elsewhere in Spain, perhaps even in the Segunda.
Now that Iraizoz and Elustondo have left the club, there only remains one player who is in question. Enric Saborit’s contract runs out at the end of this month, but the club does hold an option to automatically extend it for another year. The 25-year-old featured mainly as a depth player behind Mikel Balenziaga so if they club can bring in another left-back, Saborit is expected to leave the Athletic as well.
