Inaki Williams is currently enjoying his summer by serving international duty with Spain’s U21 team. Many have pegged the Spaniards as one of the favorites to win the U21 EUROs and Inaki hopes to play a big role in that. In a recent interview with Onda Cerro he was asked about his future. Several clubs such as Juventus and Liverpool has been linked with the 23-year-old, but he remains firm that he has no plans to leave his boyhood club.
“I am very happy where I am, very happy. I hope to continue at Athletic Club for many more years. As far as I know, there have been no offers. My agent handles all of that, but there is no where else I want to be.”
Turning his attention to the EUROs, Inaki admitted that the 5-0 win over Macedonia was a great start, but that he also knows there is a lot of expectations on the team. Despite the squad being made up of very talented and successful players, they will have to prove themselves on the pitch because nothing can be taken for granted in this tournament.
“We started with a good game and the truth is that we have a lot of expectations and a lot of enthusiasm to go far in the tournament. We have a great selection of players who are playing very well at the club level, but we have to prove it on the field. Nothing is settled.”
Athletic Club will begin preseason training on 3 July, meaning Inaki and Kepa Arrizabalaga could miss out due to their duties with Spain U21. However, the Lions may be able to gain their services earlier than expected due to the fact that the Basques will be playing the first leg of their Europa League qualifier on 27 July. Until then, Cuco Ziganda will continue preparing for the upcoming season and making squad decisions to ensure he has the strongest team possible.
