Kepa Arrizabalaga is one of the most promising young keepers in European football along with the likes of Gianluigi Donnarumma. Like his Italian counterpart, Kepa has the chance to become something very special, but his contract is also set to expire in 2018. This has, understandably, led to fans worrying about his future at Athletic Club. While giving an interview with Onda Cero, Kepa was asked about the reports that he will sign a renewal when he returns from international duty. The 22-year-old confirmed those reports.
“Yes, surely. When I return from being with the U21 team my renewal will be taken care of. For now I just want to focus on the EUROs and being able to win a championship with the National Team. Inaki’s birthday? We will see if the boy has matured (laughing). He’s already 23 and isn’t a child anymore. We may need to pull him by the ears sometimes. He had his cake, we sang to him, and that is it. It was a different birthday.”
Kepa went on to say that the U21 team is looking forward to competing at a high level in hopes of the winning the EUROs. He knows that being a starter in the team isn’t something to take for granted and that winning the tournament will not be an easy task.
“Everyone is on vacation but we are playing for something very special and we all want to be here. It has cost us a lot, but it is a beautiful championship. After this we will have a well deserved vacation. We try not to look at the social networks to see what people are saying. I don’t like to talk about playing time. Everyone wants to be a starter, of course, but there are 23 players in the squad and the coach decides the lineup. This is a championship that has been won by great teams and players. The road is difficult, but hopefully we can win.”
Kepa Arrizabalaga is as much the keeper of the present as he is the keeper of the future. After growing up at Lezama the 22-year-old is now realizing his dream of stopping shots at the San Mames. He is expected to sign a renewal until 2022 when he returns from international duty that will also give him a significant wage and release clause increase. Kepa has remained vocal about the fact that he wants to continue at Athletic despite interest from other clubs.
