Last summer Oscar Gil made the jump from Bilbao Athletic to compete for a place in the first team. Eventually he lost out to Yeray and was sent out on loan to Real Oviedo in the Segunda. Unfortunately, the defender failed to play regular minutes due to competition and injury, but he is hopeful to convince Cuco Ziganda of a place at the San Mames this season.
Before that can happen, Oscar Gil needs to sign a new contract with the Basque giants. His current deal is set to expire at the end of this month and he has yet to hear from Athletic about his future. The 22-year-old is hoping to cover the loss of Yeray who will miss three months of action after suffering a relapse in his battle against cancer. However, Unai Nunez will also be spending the preseason with the first team and will be strong competition for Gil. If the Lezama product does not extend his contract he will be leaving the club this summer.
Growing up at Lezama, Gil showcased the ability to be a versatile footballer. He spent time playing at center-back and well as defensive midfielder. During Bilbao Athletic’s Segunda season under Cuco Ziganda, he also played on the side of the three-man defense. Gil has always been praised by coaches for his high understanding of the game and positioning, though his physicality could use some improvement. Spending a second year in the Segunda with Real Oviedo was supposed to serve as a stepping stone for Athletic, but it will be up to Cuco Ziganda to decide whether he is ready or not for the jump.
Former Bilbao Athletic teammates Markel Etxeberria, Urtzi Iriondo, and Gorka Santamaria will all be returning from Segunda loans as well and have been informed that they will be leaving for a second time this summer. Oscar Gil is patiently waiting to find out what his future holds, but he is hopeful that Athletic will reach out to him with a renewal offer before his contract runs out on 30 June.
