Yeray has officially begun his chemotherapy treatments after he suffered a relapse in his battle with cancer just a few weeks ago. Last week the 22-year-old posted a picture celebrating the completion of his first day of the treatment and he has been in good spirits despite having to face cancer for a second time. He is expected to miss three months of football, but he is doing everything that he can to return as quickly as possible.
On Monday morning the defender posted another picture and a video of him running at the Lezama gym. He was even joking around with fellow Athletic teammate, Iker Muniain, who is currently on vacation in Ibiza.
The fact that Yeray is already doing some form of regular training is incredible. He is going to continue working as hard as his treatment will allow him so that he can be in the best shape possible when he is cleared to return to football. He has been very outspoken about he desire to conquer this disease once again and show that he is stronger than cancer. In fact, the 22-year-old has also made trips to Madrid where he spoke at a conference to raise awareness for testicular cancer.
Yeray will be a major part of Cuco Ziganda’s squad for the present and the future. Last year he made his first team debut and went on to form a solid pairing with Aymeric Laporte. The duo has quickly become one of the strongest defensive units in European football and they should only get better with time given the fact that both are still in their early twenties. Eneko Boveda and Xabi Etxeita are expected to fill in until Yeray returns, which is expected to be sometime near the middle of September.
