Iker Undabarrena has been tabbed as one of the most exciting midfielder prospects at Lezama for a number of years now. After being promoted to Bilbao Athletic in 2013 he became a vital part of Cuco Ziganda’s team and was constantly moving closer to a place in the first team. Sadly, he torn his ACL in February of 2016 and did not return until late October. He played in 21 games last season but now the club has decided that he needs a bigger test if he is going to carve out a path to the San Mames.
According to a report from El Desmarque Bizkaia, Segunda side UD Almeria is interested in signing the 22-year-old on loan for the upcoming season and have been in contacts with Athletic Club.
Right now Undabarrena is training with Bilbao Athletic, but Ziganda has made it clear that he wants the midfielder to be loaned to the Segunda so he can test himself against stronger competition. Almeria would be a great landing spot for Undabarrena because he would be able to challenge for a starting role at the club and play significant minutes which is exactly what Athletic Club wants for him. It will remain to be seen if the deal goes through or not.
Undabarrena is a very smart footballer who controls the game by reading play. He isn’t the most physical defensive midfielder, but his ability to get interceptions, steal possession, and be a part of the passing game makes him a versatile player. Almeria were also in talks to sign Alex Remiro on loan, but the keeper has joined Huesca instead. With talks ongoing between the two clubs, the possibility of Undabarrena leaving on loan looks promising.
