Bilbao Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano is hard at work preparing his squad for the upcoming season. The Katxorros are aiming to compete for promotion back to the Segunda but they know it will be a difficult undertaking. The club has already strengthened the team quite a bit this summer, signing players like Jesus Areso, Asier Benito, Gaizka Larrazabal, and others. With that being the case, some players will have to leave in order to make room and two have just been revealed.Athletic Club recently announced that right-back Jon Agirrezabala and midfielder Asier Parra have left the club on loan for the upcoming season. Agirrezabala has joined SD Amorebieta while Parra has joined Portugalete.
Agirrezalaba’s transfer is slightly surprising, but it does make sense. Last year he featured as the team’s starting right-back, playing in 29 of the 38 total matches. The 21-year-old did have pressure from newly promoted Jon Sillero the entire season and the premise is that he will now become the starter this season. Sillero has been an exciting prospect for a few years now and has impressed to the point where he got minutes this preseason with the first team under Kuko Ziganda. Newly signed Jesus Areso will also challenge for the starting role which is Agirrezabala has become the odd man out.
Asier Parra’s exit is a little more straight forward. The 20-year-old spent all of last season on loan at Sodupe UC instead of playing with CD Basconia. This summer, upon his return, he was promoted to Bilbao Athletic but it was clear from the start that he was going to be way down the line of midfielders and would find it difficult to see regular action. Now that he has joined Portugalate he will have the chance to play every week and continue to make his case for a regular role in Athletic’s reserve team.
