Athletic Club officially kicked off the new La Liga season with a scoreless draw against Getafe at the San Mamés. It was a hard fought game that saw the visitors go down a man in the second half, but still put on a strong defensive display. Despite the lack of goals, Athletic was clearly the stronger side and they dominated possession and chances from start to finish. Sadly, there was a bit of bad news on the day as one player had to leave early in the first half after picking up an injury.
Roughly 15 minutes into the game Oscar De Marcos beat his defender and then played a pass diagonally to Mikel San Jose. After kicking the ball the right-back immediately sat down and raised his hand to stop play. He was grabbing his leg in pain but replay did not show anything that suggested that he had suffered an injury. Iñigo Lekue was brought on and the club soon announced that De Marcos had suffered a left ankle sprain with some ligament damage.
On Monday the 28-year-old will undergo more tests to discover the severity of his injury but Kuko Ziganda said after the match that he expects the defender to miss a few weeks of action. With De Marcos likely out for a while, Lekue may continue to fill in at the right-back position after a strong showing against Getafe.
De Marcos joins Ander Iturraspe who is also out dealing with a muscle injury. The midfielder has missed about three weeks of action and has yet to return to regular training. With two games in seven days depth and rotations will be more important than ever. The Lions are hoping that De Marcos will not miss too much time and fans should look for more details on Monday. For now all of the attention will turn to Panathinaikos as Athletic will be looking to book their place in the group stage of the Europa League.
