Despite playing to a scoreless draw in Sunday’s La Liga opener, there were two very special storylines to watch for Athletic Club. Newly promoted Unai Nuñez started in defense alongside Aymeric Laporte, while winger Iñigo Córdoba was brought on late in the second half. Following the match, both Lezama products discussed the game and reflected on making their first team debuts under manager Kuko Ziganda.
“I did not expect to play, but when the coach tells you that you are playing too have to be at 150 percent. Athletic is full of kids who came out of the academy and we were very lucky to make our debuts today. Of course there are nerves on a debut, but I think I settled in. We were hoping for a victory and we played well, but in the end we have only earned a point, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Walking out and hearing the anthem gave me chills. It was a special day. This is a dream come true, a dream I have had since I was tiny. We [Nuñez and Córdoba] are friends and now we share this special moment.”
“When I came on the Mister told me that we were going to play with three defenders and me on the wing. That would give us depth going forward and we would try to send the ball into the box because Getafe was very organized. After the game my phone was full of messages congratulating me. My family and I are very happy for today. I am giving my shirt to my grandfather who is a huge Athletic fan. I’m very fortunate to make my debut and stay in the team and now I hope to learn from my great teammates and keep working hard.”
