The summer transfer window has officially closed, but it sure had plenty of drama and stories that swirled around Athletic Club. On the very last day rumors surfaced that Borussia Dortmund had offered to pay Iñaki Williams’ €50 million release clause and double his wages. The 23-year-old has been very vocal about wanting to stay at Athletic and that is exactly what happened despite interest from several European clubs. On Saturday, Iñaki spoke with ETB and said that he finds all of the rumors funny and that he has no plans to leave his boyhood club.
“I’m calm, happy, and very focused on Athletic Club which is where I want to be. I laugh when I hear the rumors and my teammates tease me with them in the locker room. I dream of being a benchmark in Europe, with or without goals. For example, with assists to Aduriz so that he can finish them. That makes us grow as a team and the team success is the most important thing. I joined the team late after being with the U21 team. Physically I had to get ready, but I think I am playing well and have to seize the opportunities that I am handed. Everyone here wants to play and I’m ready to do my best. I’m playing a lot and I don’t want to stop.”
The winger went on to say that the goal for the month of August was to qualify for the Europa League group stage, but that he is still upset over the scoreless draw against Getafe at the San Mamés in the first game of the La Liga calendar. He also praised manager Kuko Ziganda who demands a lot from the team and wants to make the fans proud.
“The goal for the first month was to be in Europe, but in the league I was left with a bad taste after not winning at home against Getafe. I think we have played well and arrived at the break in a good place. The Europa League is a competition that can be glorious for us. We like it a lot and is makes us very excited. It is clear that it’s a very special tournament for us and our fans. The Mister is very on top of things. He demands a lot os us and wants the fans to be proud of us and this team.”
Iñaki Williams and Athletic Club will be back in action on 10 September when they will host newly promoted Girona. The clash will also see former Athletic players Gorka Iraizoz and Jonas Ramalho, who currently play for Girona, make their return to the San Mamés. The Lions currently sit tied for fourth in the La Liga table on four points and will be looking to seal three more and keep their strong start going.
