After suffering their first defeat of the season Athletic Club won’t have long to think about it. On Wednesday they will welcome Atletico Madrid to the San Mamés with hopes of turning things back around and picking up more points to keep pace in the European zone of the La Liga table. On Tuesday night, right-back Iñigo Lekue was a guest on Fuera de Juego and was quick to say that the Lions deserved a point against Las Palmas. Still, the team is in good spirits and know that their best football is still to come.
“A just result in yesterday’s game would have been a draw. We dominated in parts of the game, but were not able to take anything away from it. We can definitely do better, but the feelings in principle are pretty good. There is room for improvement in our game, but the feelings are positive. We know that our best will come. We are a team built from the youth system and we have demonstrated that. It’s something we are proud of.”
Lekue went on to say that Kuko Ziganda’s rotational policy is a great thing for the team and the entire squad is getting chances to compete. He’s happy to play anywhere that the manager tells him to, but does believe that he performs his best on the right side of the field. Like everyone else at Athletic, he is very excited to take on Atletico Madrid in just a few days.
“The rotations are great for the team. It means everyone is getting chances and there is more competition. We have a squad full of guarantees. Personally, I believe that I play my best football on the right side, but I am versatile so I’m happy to play anywhere that the Mister tells me. Now we are focused on Wednesday’s game. Atletico Madrid is a great team. This is one of those games that we are excited about playing.”
Athletic Club currently sits in sole place of sixth place in the La Liga table despite their loss to Las Palmas. The Lions will be hoping to take at least a point off of Atletico Madrid at the San Mamés to continue their strong start, but it isn’t going to be easy. After not starting over the weekend, players like Aritz Aduriz, Iker Muniain, and Beñat are expected to be back in the lineup for what will be a very intense clash.
