Kepa Arrizabalaga is one of the best young goalkeepers in all of football and it is only natural that other clubs would eventually turn an eye to the 22-year-old. Since making his first team debut last season, the Lezama product quickly earned the starting role in the team and has already become one of the top players in his position in La Liga. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season and the two sides have yet to reach an agreement on a renewal, which has fans worried and other big club hoping that they can take advantage.
On Tuesday, Kepa was on the cover of Marca along with a report stating that Real Madrid have set their eyes on the goalkeepers with hopes of signing him for next season. Of course, Athletic would never negotiate this move, but unless they can reach an agreement on a renewal he will be free to negotiate with any club starting on 1 January. Ultimately, this decision may very well be up to Kepa Arrizabalaga himself.
Interestingly enough, famed Athletic Club reporter Nika Cuenca weighed in on the rumors just before Marca released their story. On Twitter he had the following to say: “Despite what is being written and said, Kepa wants to renew with Athletic Club and an agreement is close”. Cuenca is viewed as the most trustworthy Athletic reporter of our day and this has left many fans with the ability to take a deep breath and hope for the best. In the end, only time will tell what will happen with this situation.
There is no denying just how good Kepa has been since taking over as the first team goalkeeper. His reflexes are world class and his composure gives his defense confidence and security. The world has taken notice and Athletic are hopeful that he will make the decision to stay at his boyhood club. According to reports, Kepa has not been in contact with other clubs regarding his future and is still hoping for Athletic to offer larger wages in his new contract. Both sides will continue to meet, but Real Madrid’s interest certain shakes things up quite a bit.
