Athletic Club 1-2 Atletico Madrid: Postgame Player Comments

It has been a rollercoaster of a week for Athletic Club fans. After going unbeaten in their first eight games, the Lions have lost their last two matches and has fallen all the way to 8th in the La Liga table. Raúl García scored the team’s only goal in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid and after the game he said that he only wants to focus on the positive. Likewise, Mikel San José said the team needs to look ahead and prepare for Sunday’s match against Malaga. Here is what they had to say:

Raúl García refused to blame Aritz Aduriz’s missed penalty (AthleticTV)

Raúl García

“It was a game where we had great feelings that we were doing things right. I prefer to focus on the positive because we did a lot of things well. Aduriz’s missed penalty. I do not like to define a match based on one moment like this. Aduriz always scores and we know what he is capable of and how important he is for us. If I had scored some of the chances that I had we would not be talking about the missed penalty.”

Mikel San José

“Their first goal did a lot of damage because they do well when they have the lead. It was a very different game with them ahead. We put in a great effort but when you advance further up the field it allows for counter attacks. Despite our desire to turn it around it was impossible. It is difficult to lose a game at home. The penalty could have changed things, but we cannot think about that because we had other chances. These two defeats don’t sink us. We knew losses would come at some point because it is impossible to avoid it. Now we have to raise our heads because in three days we need to be focused on Malaga.”
